Ravelympics 2010

After finishing two lace shawls in the days leading up to Christmas, I decided to take a break from knitting for a little while. I find that if I don't have another project lined up when I'm about to complete a project, I have a difficult time motivating myself to do gauge swatches and decide which project to start next. So I decided to do a little bit of cross stitch over the holidays instead of knitting and at the end of January I started the Little Sister's Dress by Tora Froseth. It will be a present for Vishali (maybe birthday, but more likely Christmas). I'm using Berroco Sox Metallic in a pink and purple palette. The silver metallic thread through the yarn gives it a little extra sparkle.

I also signed on for this year's Ravelympics. I picked my project late Thursday night, so I'm a last minute ravthlete. I've entered the Hat Halfpipe with the Claudette Hat by Erin Ruth. The pattern uses Ella Rae Lace Merino, a yarn that I had in my stash. I had to wind the particularly temperamental skein of yarn last night and started a gauge swatch. Without removing it from the needles, it looks like I'll have to go up at least one more needle size. Hopefully I'll finish gauge swatching today and will be able to start the project. I have until the end of the Olympics to finish the project, so I'll also have to set Shali's dress aside until the beginning of March.

Oh, and Happy Valentine's Day!

flickr

Several months ago, a registrar on the RC-AAM list serve suggested that everyone on the list search for their institutions on flickr. I was startled to find pictures taken in the VHS galleries. I was especially startled to see pictures from a temporary exhibition in a gallery that should have been posted "No Photography." The photos I saw in June appear to have been removed. At least they don't turn up in my present search of flickr. However, I am intrigued by a series of photographs from the Story of Virginia and Virginians at Work. Why did one photographer find the acoustiguides so interesting? It must've been an assignment for a class. The exterior of the VHS, along with the War Horse, also appears to be a popular subject.

I created a flickr account over the summer in order to post pictures to Ravelry, a social networking web site for knitters, crocheters, and other fiber artists. I've been too busy knitting (what else) to upload photographs of my past and current knitting projects to flickr for Ravelry (my mother keeps bugging me about this), but I did use flickr in early September to post some photos that I took during InLight Richmond (First Friday) on September 5th. theknittingpict's flickr

I'm not sure how the VHS could use flickr. I'm hesitant to suggest using it for posting images of items in the VHS collections. This former Visual Resources Manager is slightly paranoid about people using VHS images without permission. I hope to someday get over this fear and live a normal and productive life. Maybe flickr is a better place for photos of events and exhibitions at the VHS.

Random note: I really enjoyed the "fun stuff" on Jim Bumgardner's web site, especially Stick Figures in Peril.
